Severe tropical storm Fung-wong is intensifying and set to strike Taiwan on Monday (28th July), the second tropical storm to hit the island in 10 days. According to the Japanese Meteorological Bureau, Fung-wong has sustained winds of 55kts and is due to make landfall on Taiwan on Monday near Taidong with winds of 80kts gusting up to 115kts.

Last weekend typhoon Kalmaegi struck northern Taiwan killing 19 people and causing extensive flooding across the island.

If this storm looks like hitting Taiwan as a strong typhoon I will travel to the island to cover events first hand. Be sure to check back here for more updates on this developing situation.

Tropical storm Dolly has formed in the tropical Atlantic and is now passing to the north of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula with sustained winds of 45 knots. It is now passing into the Gulf of Mexico, an area which is notorious for rapidly intensifying tropical storms and hurricanes. The National Hurricane Centre forecast Dolly to peak at 75 knots before slamming into the border between the USA and Mexico in three days time. The track and intensity of Dolly will have to be monitored very closely by residents along the gulf coast of Texas and northern Mexico in case rapid strengthening occurs.

Be sure to check back here for more updates on this developing situation.

Tropical Storm Kalmaegi Approaching Shanghai - 19th July 2008 0500z

Image 2

UPDATE #2:     Typhoon Kalmaegi tore through Taiwan yesterday unleashing torrential rains and ferocious winds over 90 miles per hour. The BBC are reporting six people killed and four more are missing. The storm went on to make landfall over the eastern Chinese province of Fujian.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has downgraded the Kalmaegi to tropical storm strength with sustained winds of 35 knots gusting to 50 knots. The storm is expected to hit Shanghai in the next few hours.

The storm is expected to intensify slightly when is crosses back into the East China Sea and it could go on to affect the Korean peninsula in the next couple of days. Kalmaegi means sea gull in Korean.

Every year typhoons regularly strike the nations straddling the northwest Pacific Ocean.

This is a developing situation and at present it is unclear as to the potential impact this storm may have on the Philippines, Taiwan and China. I will provide updates as often as possible.

UPDATE #1:     The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) have upgraded tropical  storm Kalmaegi to typhoon status with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour gusting up to 115 miles per hour.

Kalmaegi is currently about 200 nautical miles south south-east of Taipei in Taiwan and is moving north north-west at 10 miles per hour. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has issued sea warnings as the storm moves further into its waters. Kalmaegi means sea gull in Korean.

JMA forecast Kalmaegi to continue to move northwards and intensify as it passes northern Taiwan. This is the 7th storm of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season. Last month typhoon Fengshen tore through the central Philippines before making a direct hit on Hong Kong as a tropical storm.

Every year typhoons regularly strike the nations straddling the northwest Pacific Ocean.

This is a developing situation and at present it is unclear as to the potential impact this storm may have on the Philippines, Taiwan and China. I will provide updates as often as possible.

The NW Pacific is starting to awaken after a few weeks of little tropical activity. Invest area 93W has been upgraded to a tropical depression by JMA and is subject to a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert by JTWC. A few weather models predict that this storm will develop and move north. Since I am more or less directly NNW of this system, in Shanghai, I will be monitoring it closely over the coming days.

UPDATE: JTWC have just issued their first warning on TD 08W. They forecast it to move north and strength as it passes Taiwan. There is a chance it could affect Zhejiang and Shanghai in about 5 days time.
