Typhoon Molave Racing Towards Hong Kong, Macau and Southern China - Hong Kong Observatory Raises Storm Signal 8 - City Effectively Shut Down - 18th July 2009 1600z

Sustained winds - 65kts

Maximum gusts - 95kts

Heading - West northwest at 11kts

Forecast landfall location - Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta (JMA data at 12z 18th July)

Typhoon Molave has continued to track west to west northwest and appears to be on a crash course with Hong Kong and southern China within the next 8 hours. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Molave has sustained winds of 75kts, well above typhoon strength.

The Hong Kong Observatory have just issued storm signal 8 effectively shutting down Hong Kong as gales are increasing over the city. Higher signals could be issued later in the night if the intense eyewall of Molave passes Hong Kong.

Severe tropical storm Molave has continued to track west to west northwest overnight and appears to be on a crash course with Hong Kong and southern China within the next 24 hours. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Molave has sustained winds of 65kts bringing the storm to typhoon strength.

Severe Tropical Storm Molave Exploding Between Taiwan and the Philippines - Could Strike Hong Kong as Major Storm - 17th July 2009 1600z

Severe tropical storm Molave has explosively intensified over the last 18 hours and is just below typhoon strength. The image above shows a clear eye and consolidating eyewall as the storm passes to the south of Taiwan.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Molave has sustained winds of 60kts with gusts up to 85kts. The storm is currently moving west northwest at 17kts, a track which could take it close to Hong Kong later tomorrow evening or early Sunday morning.

Tropical Storm Molave Erupting Off the Northeast Philippines - Could Strike Hong Kong This Weekend - 16th July 2009 1500z

Tropical storm Molave is rapidly consolidating northeast of the Philippines' island of Luzon. Current forecasts suggests Molave could pass close by Hong Kong on Saturday night or Sunday morning as a severe tropical storm.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Molave has sustained winds of 35kts with gusts up to 50kts. Check back here or my Twitter feed http://twitter.com/typhoonfury for updates on this situation....

Tropical Depression Strengthening to the Northeast of the Philippines, Threatens Luzon, Taiwan and Southern China - 15th July 2009 1700z

Tropical depression 07W is intensifying rapidly to the northeast of the Philippines and is expected to be upgraded to a tropical storm within the next 24 hours. The satellite image above shows deep convection associated with the system that has developed explosively over the last 6 hours.

The current forecast track takes this system between Taiwan and the Philippines through the Bashi Strait towards southern China.

Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert - NW Pacific 9th July 2009 1030z

An area of low pressure has developed off the northeast coast of the Philippines and is now subject to a tropical cyclone formation alert (TCFA) by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC). Dubbed Invest 99W, this area of disturbed weather is likely to develop into a tropical depression over the next 24 hours.

The Philippines government has already upgraded this system to a tropical depression and named it Gorio. They forecast it to move west northwest towards southern China in line with latest model guidance.
