Typhoon Hagupit Pummels Hong Kong with Strong Winds and Heavy Rain - Gusts over 180km/h recorded on the hills around Hong Kong Airport - Typhoon Signal 8 Hoisted - 23rd September 2008 1900z

Here is video I shot of the intense wind and rain which hit Hong Kong earlier this evening!

Typhoon

The Hong Kong government issued typhoon signal T8 this evening effectively shutting down the city as typhoon Hagupit passed close by offshore. Hagupit has intensified into a very strong typhoon with sustained winds of  105mph according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

The wind is still blowing strongly and various weather stations around the territory have registered winds in excess of 100mph. In the towns of Stanley and Shek O on the south side of Hong Kong island winds blew down trees and blocked roads and businesses were forced to close early all over the bustling metropolis of seven million people.

I have just returned after spending 6 hours documenting the most extreme parts of the storm. Video will be posted shortly.

Typhoon Sinlaku

SUCCESSFUL INTERCEPT OF NORTHERN EYEWALL - TYPHOON CONDITIONS LASTED OVER 5 HOURS!! 18th September 2008 1600z

This is a video I shot showing the incredible conditions we witnessed in the eyewall of typhoon Sinlaku

Today we visited the mountain town of Lushan which was innundated by a huge flash flood caused by over 1600mm of rain which feel in the area. There was extensive damage including a hotel which had collapsed on its side into the river which now runs through the main street. The photo below show the severity of the flooding.

Huge waves pound the north shore of Taiwan ahead of typhoon Sinlaku

Typhoon Sinlaku roared ashore last night with winds blasting over 100kts and rain so thick visibilty was reduced to zero. Geoff Mackley and myself rode out the storm at the port facility of Toucheng where fierce eyewall conditions pounded us for over 5 hours.

We will be heading back to Taipei today all the NE coast road to survey the damage. More updates and video to be uploaded later.

Waves

Huge waves pound the north shore of Taiwan ahead of typhoon Sinlaku

Typhoon Sinlaku is crawling towards Taiwan after intensifying into powerful typhoon. According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Sinlaku is packing sustained winds of 95kts with gusts up to 135kts.

Taiwan’s Central weather bureau have issued typhoon warnings for the island and the storm is expected to make landfall over the eastern side of the island on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Sinlaku is a slow moving storm which increases the risks of severe flooding and damage. Some forecasts estimate the typhoon could take up to 24 hours to cross Taiwan which if verified could lead to vast quantities of rain falling.

I am now in NE Taiwan north of the town of Ilan covering the action with fellow storm chaser Geoff Mackley. More updates to come!
